In December of 1924, the dean of Miskatonic University calls you urgently to the Orne Library where the chief librarian is desperate for help. On each of the last three nights, after closing, books from the reference shelves disappeared mysteriously. All that remains in their place is ash. It could just be a student prank. But what if it’s something more? No one can take a chance that the stacks, including the mysterious Special Collection, might go up in smoke. Will the investigators check out the problem?
In this two-page one-shot adventure in easy-to-absorb pamphlet format, playable in a single session by two or more players, investigators must discover the cause behind a curious theft or prank or worse, thwart human foes intent upon invoking a terrifying horror, and prevent their own destruction and the possible obliteration of an iconic setting at Miskatonic University.

This adventure includes 2 pages of scenario information with locations, scenes, NPCs, and clues to use at the Keeper’s discretion. This condensed format is best used by Keepers who have run Call of Cthulhu scenarios before and who need a foundation for their own embellishments. This could be a useful scenario for first-time players or an abbreviated timeframe, such as a convention.
Trigger warnings: Horror, Insanity, Violence
The adventure begins during a winter evening in 1924 at The Orne Library at Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts. Administrators at the institution appeal to the investigators to solve the mystery of some missing (or burned?) books. An eerie, nighttime investigation of the locked library reveals a plot of dangerous and volatile scope.
The scenario encompasses four scenes:
- First Floor: Employing the investigators and beginning interviews and searches
- Second Floor: Discovering secrets in faculty offices and The Special Collection
- Basement: Finding out methods and motives
- Roof: Getting a view from the top

- A two-page pamphlet in PDF format. It is 8 1/2″ x 11″ and is layed out to be folded in thirds. Two versions are provided, one for easy screen reading and the other with the second page flipped around for two-sided printing.
- A handout of a sign up sheet from the library’s meeting space, the club room
- Four versions of a handout for an item called The Salem Folio — one image of the item in a glass frame, another without frame, and PDF and text of the contents for readability
